New Publication: Biointegrative Collagen Implant Use in Complex Hip and Knee Arthroplasty
Dr. Chris Hoedt, MD, has published a new article in the Journal of Orthopaedic Experience & Innovation detailing his early clinical experience with the use of a biointegrative collagen implant in complex hip and knee arthroplasty.
Complex primary and revision joint replacement procedures often present a significant challenge: while the mechanical reconstruction may be successful, achieving reliable soft-tissue coverage remains difficult. In this article, Dr. Hoedt explores the role of a biointegrative collagen scaffold as an adjunct—not a replacement—to standard reconstructive techniques, specifically aimed at addressing residual soft-tissue deficiencies.
The report outlines practical clinical applications and surgical techniques, emphasizing that the implant is used after definitive reconstruction has been completed to supplement areas where native tissue coverage remains limited.
A key highlight of the publication is the inclusion of second-look observations from subsequent procedures. At approximately three to four months post-implantation, treated areas demonstrated a continuous and subjectively thicker soft-tissue layer, with histologic findings supporting the presence of viable fibrovascular tissue.
While these findings are preliminary and not intended to establish definitive clinical efficacy, they provide important early insights into the biological response and potential utility of collagen-based scaffolds in complex arthroplasty settings. The study underscores the need for further prospective research to evaluate long-term outcomes, reproducibility, and functional benefits.
